I'm probably in the minority, I BUY dvds from stores. I don't watch 'em all from websites, ebay pirated copies, $1.00 rentals via Redbox or do Netflix or HD satelite channels. The studios AND stores should maybe kiss my shoes but BR titles won't always have decent HD! superdog

I still buy DVD's; Blu Rays of movies I REALLY like; sometimes both if I know family will be after it to see it; give them the DVD of course haha... actually most my doubles are because they're older movies that I already had on VHS... then DVD....

I download a lot of movies, and I do store them on a lot of external HDD's because I can access them via my PS3 to veiw on the big screen. But the truth is, if its a movie I like, even if I only saw it after downloading I WILL go and buy the DVD/BR pending my enjoyment of course; of the movie because I prefer the higher quality of production release. :D

Maybe it's just like when b&w movies and TV shows were colorized, there were a number of places that did it, some did GOOD work, others did it crummy. This is probably why HD is a mixed bag. Unforunetely as with colorization places, HD places get major titles to do, not always places doing good HD.

So I guess studios aren't guilty here. It's just a bummer if your favorite titles don't always get decent HD jobs. An Olsen Twins movie where Ashley's in HD but Mary Kate isn't.

Braveheart is one of the best reviewed Blu-ray catalogue titles EVER. I'm surprised by your comments.

http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/2470/braveheart.html

"Filmed in the mid-90s, 'Braveheart' bursts onto Blu-ray with an HD transfer as spectacular as the rolling green hills of Northern England. The 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 transfer of 'Braveheart' is as near perfect as you can get for a catalog title. "

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Braveheart-Blu-ray/1289/

"...more often than not it takes on a superb film-like appearance that captures the essence of what Blu-ray is all about."

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1177366

"Let me state up front that this is an impressive high definition presentation of this film. I have owned it on home video since its release and have never seen it look better."

At the risk of sounding slightly rude Superdog, I'd almost be tempted to question your monitor (TV). I could understand complaints about some of the lesser titles. Some of the small stuff like SCREWBALLS is done from 16mm sources. As the old saying goes: everybody is entitled to their opinion.

But BRAVEHEART is very highly rated by all reviewers. The first two linked reviews give it 4.5 stars out of 5. The third review uses a different system and gives it 88 which puts it in the "Excellent" category.

So when I see a post that BRAVEHEART "...well it didn't look HD at all", the only thing I can say is "Huh"?

If it didn't look HD to you, fair enough. I don't have your eyes or your TV set so I can't argue the point. By the same token, I can't explain it either because I can't find a bad review of the Braveheart picture quality anywhere.

Brent, when did THAT edition come out? I couldn't find out if BR did two editions, the one I have is the Saphire series version. BTW, I didn't see it but a rental store owner told me, she did NOT stock it, that the PLANET EARTH series set on BR has the best HD she ever saw, no movie dvd touched it ( at that time anyway ). She watches satelite HD channels but must watch BR dvds too.
I'm a moron about techno babble and details of my audio video equipment so I have to wait till Friday afternoon to get the info on what specs my HT system/s has when I can contact my tech man. He builds Vandersteen amps and his cellphone is hard to reach as he's outside town. He claims it was broken anyway.

Here's the thing: a decent HD image can be reduced when seeing it via a 1080P projector throwing the image across the room 17 to 20 feet onto a 106ish inch diagonal screen to the point it looks somewhat improved from modern SD quality!

I've seen the Frasure MUMMY HD via my 50 inch HD TV screen to a much improved effect but HD should exist for dedicated HT systems and that's likely less often or it used to be that way. Does AVATAR have that degree of HD? Well no extras, I'm not buying it. BLUE PLANET or PLANET EARTH would be what I'd check out because of the supposedly state of the art HD.

That's a 16x9 format screen basically 8 FEET across.
